Mission Statement

Utilizing the powerful beauty of words and images via a multi-media platform, Angel Helper promotes philanthropic journalism that  informs, inspires, and enhances the lives of others.

Angel Helper serves as a conduit for colorless, seamless humanity, aiding all races, creeds, faiths, and walks of life.  Its compelling stories and cases lend a voice to the silent and shine a light on the unseen. Compassion, dignity and sensitivity reign paramount in the handling of each story. Angel Helper serves the purpose of imploring our audience, both collectively and individually, to uplift those we encounter.

How Angel Helper Came To Be

Nineteen years ago, I walked into my life’s work. I took a gamble and quit a full-time job working in the mail room at one station to take a part-time job for ten weeks in the newsroom of another station. In that capacity, I became the assistant to something called People Helper. It was a unique program that depended upon our audience and business community to aid in a variety of needs. Before I knew it, ten weeks extended into four years.

During that period, I was blessed to select and coordinate stories  ranging from replacing a disabled vet’s manual wheelchair that only went backwards to planning dream weddings and vacations. In one case, we launched a relief drive for Hurricane Andrew victims that turned out to be at that time the nation’s largest private relief drive. Within 48 hours, we raised $250,000 and a 747 cargo load of supplies that we accompanied to Florida.  I always said when I became rich or hit the lottery I would start a national Angel Helper program. I now realize that we can start now.

To fully understand the potential of this endeavor and what a difference it can make in one’s life, allow me to share the power of a simple story and why this work is so important:

I took a call from a teacher about a young teenager with the Elephant Man’s disease. The tumors stole the sight of one eye and were quickly invading the second. Her dream was to see New Kids On The Block before she went blind.

There was no way she was just going to get tickets to a concert. A restaurant donated dinner, a limo company provided transportation and a national department store outfitted her.

Initially, I was informed to just get her a sweatshirt and jeans. Something didn’t sit right with me, and if I sit still and follow that little voice, I’m normally right.

Somewhere in my conversation with this child, I realized she didn’t recall EVER wearing a dress.

I was shocked, then clarity hit me. She wasn’t afforded the opportunity because the world didn’t tell her she was beautiful---and we were about to change that.

“Now, you can get whatever you want, but would you like to wear a dress?” I asked.

“Yes, that would be nice,” she said as her one eye glimmered just realizing the possibility.

The glow she emanated as she looked at her reflection in the mirror still abides with me. If she never again in life thinks she’s beautiful, she felt it for that moment.

That story was magic, like so many others.  So, with this program and your help, we will create magic again in other people’s lives.
